Gearbox ratios, advice, pro`s and con`s?!

    Right,

ive decided i will be using a 5sp gearbox for a couple of reasons:

    1) my 80 Quattro saloon accelerates like my missus with my credit card on the way to the shopping centre

    2) weight

now, is my 80 just "special" with its gearbox ratios?
    5th gear is doing 3200rpm @ 60 mph!!
off the mark it is very very quick for the power output

i will be revving the engine to 10/11,000rpm so i think 5 gears will be sufficiant at this ratio

i will be RWD only as drivetrain is getting moved approx 8" backwards

does/has anyone used/have straight cut, not bothered about dog engagment, gearkits?

what sort of power are you lads running?

    any other info appreciated

We're running a CQ 016 with an AAN and kkk24k with various mods to 'bring it along', this gives pretty much instant power pickup and sprint times, gravel power is very controllable and progressive... Bigger power and taller gears are great for cars that can be let loose top end, quick pickup + grip and good power/torque makes for a fast mixed surface car.

        seems long ratio`d!

id rather a very short ratio`d one like in the 80 saloon i have,

imagine what speed my A4 would do in 3rd revving to 10k on 285/35 18`s! lol

No way a 7a box will do 115 in 3rd gear Pete! You're thinking of the 3B

i have been looking at cosworth T5`s and 200sx stuff as ive always had those cars, gearboxes on cossies do 500bhp no issues with straight cut kits available etc

A4 rack seems no problems, suggestions on this Chef?

What Terry said, no point fitting a 4wd gearbox to a 2wd car, it's worth the effort to fit something that's designed for rwd to save weight and help move the engine back a long way.

Might just be the old grey matter getting itself in a ywist but wasn't there discussions on using a Volvo gearbox sometime ago?

Madness! The search function proved to be useful for this 'rwd gearbox'

Caterpillar mentions the Ovlov gearbox in this one -

Steering rack is going to really need to be under the engine and the next massive problem you have is bring the motor back is going to make it harder to get a down pipe from the Turbo on a RHD car.

I think your going to end up having to cut the fire wall? Then you need to move the driver backwards because the tunnel will be to wide for a pedal box. And moving the steering column also?

Not really sure on the floor plan of a A4 but this is the problem with our over weight 5 cylinder lump.

"If" your really going to rev to over 10k (i wish you the best of luck) but your going to need some really big turbo so the car being RWD is going to be pretty ****ing usless.

I would head back to the drawing board.
